AMAZIGH CULTURE

Amazigh / Berber

First of all, we must talk about two terms that frequently apply to the same people: Amazigh and Berber. The term Berber has enthusiastic supporters and also declared enemies. According to Moroccan historian Benmansour, the barbarians are the inhabitants of North Africa, from Libya to the Atlantic and from the Mediterranean to Senegal and Nigeria. According to the Maria Moliner dictionary, Berber or Berber are names that apply to individuals from the oldest and largest people in northern Africa. The Greeks called them Libyans. The Romans called them numids. The ancient Egyptians and Herodotus used the term Amazigh. Berber has its origin in the word barbari, a term with which all those who did not speak Latin or Greek were called, and it means "he who babbles". Another meaning of the word barbarian is violent or wild. Amazigh, on the other hand, means nobleman and also free man, so it is easy to understand the massive predilection for the second term.

Origin of the Amazigh people

To understand the ambiguities about the origin of this town, I quote the historian Helena de Felipe: “for unknown reasons, the Berbers were never the authors or writers of their own history, which caused a mess of data, which is very complicated to fix an origin for this town ”

In the absence of written sources, most data are provided by authors of other peoples who wrote about them or legends. Various authors point to an oriental origin and a subsequent expansion through northern Africa, while for other historians its origin is firmly intertwined with that of Europe. The Berbers have been granted one origin or another based on political and domain reasons so that for the work at hand it is preferable to move away from these lands and enter into more poetic ones.

For Plato, the Imazighen (plural of Amazigh) were the Atlanteans, the most beautiful men on earth.

For the Greeks, the Berbers were the children of a dark mother, the night. Some say they were part of the Hercules army. Atlantes, Children of the Night. It is not possible to find the Berbers in another place than in the margins of History, in the small footnotes, in the legends, in poetry, places without a doubt very interesting.

THE RIFEÑAS JEWELS

Imazighen jewels do not only fulfill a decorative function, but they have a powerful magical value. They have properties that protect the devils that populate the mental universe of the Berbers, the djinn. Some of them contain amulets that help cure diseases or keep the husband. It is part of the dowry of the bride, of her trousseau. A trousseau can usually be made of a headdress, fibula, pectoral, necklaces, earrings, belt, bracelet (ankle bracelet) and bracelet, and are usually made of silver with amber, coral or turquoise beads...

THE RIFEÑOS NEIGHBORHOOD

Youhood-NOTES_FICHA_8_-_Everyday_life_3-

The neighbors of this neighborhood are hardworking people, mostly small merchants who know that you have to shake off your laziness to make a living, but that you also have to have other help so that everything ends up going well. It is already known that each person has their fate, but a push to the destination in the desired direction never hurts. Therefore, I will talk a lot about the evil eye, about spells to defeat it, about rituals, about the powers of plants, about animals that bring luck, about those elements that can threaten the existence and about the measures taken to counteract their strength...

THE RIF EVERYDAY LIFE

Youhood Amazigh Traditional old house st

The phenomenon of emigration to Europe has influenced the change of some customs of the Rifeño people.

One of the most unfortunate cases is the change in terms of habitat. In front of the traditional Amazigh house, several-storey structures now stand up that do not have much to do with the surroundings.

Until now the Amazigh house was made of adobe, an ecological and recyclable material. Stones combined with earth and surrounding wood were used, low-cost materials that protect from cold and heat.

In the Rifeña house, the essential and essential for life is attended to. It is usually reduced to a patio, hall, and room where food is prepared, eaten and rested in pallets superimposed on stone beds. Simplicity and simplicity...
